State of Palestine

A state proclaimed by the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1988 and recognized by many countries. Its claimed territory comprises the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian Declaration of Independence: A 1988 proclamation by the Palestine Liberation Organization declaring the establishment of the State of Palestine. This document formally proclaimed the state in Algiers on 15 November 1988.
Israeli–Palestinian conflict: A political and territorial conflict between Israelis and Palestinians over sovereignty, security, rights, and land. The state's status and control of territory remain central issues in the conflict.
Israel: A state established in 1948 in the former British Mandate of Palestine and recognized by most countries. Israel controls much of the territory claimed by Palestine, while the two make competing national claims.
Palestinian National Council: The Palestine Liberation Organization's representative body, which adopted the 1988 declaration of independence. Its adoption gave the declaration institutional authority within the PLO.
International Criminal Court: A permanent international tribunal that prosecutes individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression. Palestine's accession to the Rome Statute enabled the Court to exercise jurisdiction over crimes within its jurisdiction in its territory.
Palestine Liberation Organization: A Palestinian political organization founded in 1964 to represent Palestinians and pursue national self-determination. The PLO proclaimed the state and became its principal diplomatic representative.
Oslo Accords: Agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization in the 1990s that established limited Palestinian self-government and a negotiation process. They created the Palestinian Authority without resolving final-statehood questions.
United Nations General Assembly Resolution 67/19: A 2012 resolution granting Palestine non-member observer State status at the United Nations. It changed Palestine's standing at the UN without making it a full member state.
Palestinian Legislative Council: The elected legislature established under the Oslo Accords to govern parts of the Palestinian territories. It formed part of the limited self-governing system associated with Palestinian state institutions.
Rome Statute: The 1998 treaty that established the International Criminal Court and defines its jurisdiction and procedures. Palestine acceded to this treaty in 2015, affecting international legal proceedings.
