Palmitic acid

Palmitic acid is a saturated fatty acid with 16 carbon atoms, abundant in palm oil, animal fats, and many other natural lipids.

Fatty acid: A carboxylic acid with a hydrocarbon chain, commonly used as a fuel and building block in organisms. Palmitic acid is one specific member of this broad lipid building-block family.
Fatty acid synthase: A large enzyme complex that builds fatty-acid chains from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA. In animals, this complex typically produces palmitate as its main fatty-acid product.
Palm oil: An edible vegetable oil extracted from the fruit of the oil palm. Its high palmitic-acid content gives this oil its name and characteristic fatty-acid profile.
Stearic acid: A saturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms. It shares palmitic acid’s saturation but has a two-carbon-longer chain.
Saturated fat: A fat whose fatty-acid chains contain no carbon–carbon double bonds. Palmitic acid has a fully saturated carbon chain.
Acetyl-CoA: A metabolic molecule that carries an acetyl group into energy-producing and biosynthetic reactions. Its carbon atoms provide the starting unit for palmitate synthesis.
Oleochemistry: The chemical industry that uses fats and oils as raw materials. Palmitic acid is a feedstock for soaps, surfactants, and other oleochemical products.
Oleic acid: An 18-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid with one cis double bond. Its double bond contrasts with palmitic acid’s fully saturated chain.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, written –COOH. This functional group gives palmitic acid its acidic head and defines its chemical class.
Malonyl-CoA: A three-carbon coenzyme A derivative that donates two-carbon units during fatty-acid synthesis. Repeated malonyl-CoA additions extend the growing chain toward palmitate.
