Pan flute

A wind instrument made of tubes of different lengths, each producing a note when blown across its open end. Its pitch depends chiefly on the length of the vibrating air column.

Open pipe: A tube open at both ends in which resonant air-column modes produce musical pitches. Each pan-flute tube behaves acoustically like an open pipe, with one end modified by the player’s breath.
Panpipe: A family of wind instruments made from several pipes of differing lengths arranged together. Pan flute is a common name for this broader class of bundled-pipe instruments.
Ancient Greek music: The musical practices and instruments of ancient Greek societies, preserved through texts, artifacts, and images. Greek sources and art associate the syrinx with pastoral music and the god Pan.
Circular breathing: A breathing technique that sustains airflow by storing air in the cheeks while inhaling through the nose. Some pan-flute performers use it to sustain long passages without interrupting the melody.
Recorder: A fipple flute with a mouthpiece that directs air against an internal edge. Unlike a recorder, a pan flute has no built-in mouthpiece or finger holes.
Standing wave: A stationary vibration pattern formed when waves of the same frequency travel in opposite directions. Resonance inside each tube establishes the air-column pattern that determines its note.
Flue pipe: A pipe that sounds when a directed air stream meets an edge and excites resonance in the pipe. Its edge-directed airflow resembles pan-flute sound production, though its windway is built into the instrument.
Syrinx: An ancient Greek panpipe traditionally associated with the pastoral god Pan. The syrinx is the panpipe’s prominent ancient Greek counterpart and namesake tradition.
Glissando: A continuous slide through pitches between two notes. Sliding the instrument across its tube openings can create a characteristic sweeping effect.
Transverse flute: A flute held sideways, with air blown across an embouchure hole and pitch changed by keys or holes. It shares edge-tone sound production but uses one main tube rather than separate fixed-pitch pipes.
