Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway across Panama that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, letting ships avoid the long voyage around South America.

Panama Canal locks: A system of chambers that raises or lowers ships between canal water levels. The locks move vessels between sea level and Gatun Lake, then back down.
Ferdinand de Lesseps: The French diplomat and canal promoter who led the first major effort to build the Panama Canal. He launched the failed French construction project in the 1880s.
John Frank Stevens: The American engineer who reorganized Panama Canal construction and advocated a lock canal rather than a sea-level route. His engineering and logistical decisions helped make the US project workable.
