Panama disease

Panama disease is a lethal banana wilt caused by soilborne Fusarium fungi. The pathogens enter through roots and disrupt water transport, often killing the plant.

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense: A group of soilborne fungal strains that cause Fusarium wilt in banana plants. These specialized strains cause Panama disease by colonizing roots and vascular tissue.
Gros Michel banana: A banana cultivar once dominant in international trade and highly susceptible to Panama disease. Its susceptibility made early outbreaks economically devastating.
Quarantine: Restrictions on movement intended to prevent the spread of infectious agents or pests. Movement controls can limit transport of contaminated soil and planting material.
Monoculture: An agricultural system that grows one crop or cultivar across a large area. Uniform banana plantings amplify losses when a cultivar is susceptible.
Black Sigatoka: A banana leaf disease caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora fijiensis. Unlike Panama disease, it primarily damages leaves rather than blocking root-to-shoot water transport.
Xylem: The plant vascular tissue that transports water and dissolved minerals from roots to shoots. Fungal growth and plant responses impair water movement through this tissue.
Tropical Race 1: A pathogenic group of Fusarium strains that caused the classic Panama disease epidemic in Gros Michel bananas. This race drove the historic collapse of Gros Michel production.
Disease-resistant cultivar: A cultivated plant variety with inherited traits that reduce disease infection or damage. Breeding resistance is a central route to protecting banana production.
Banana industry: The global system of banana cultivation, trade, processing, and distribution. Panama disease has repeatedly forced changes in commercial cultivars and production regions.
Moko disease: A bacterial banana wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum species complex bacteria. It can resemble Fusarium wilt but has a bacterial cause.
