Panavia Tornado

The Panavia Tornado is a family of twin-engine, variable-sweep-wing combat aircraft developed jointly by the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy. Its principal variants served as a strike aircraft, an air-defense fighter, and a reconnaissance aircraft.

Variable-sweep wing: An aircraft wing whose sweep angle can change in flight to suit different speed and handling requirements. The Tornado’s movable wings balance efficient low-speed flight with high-speed performance.
Panavia Aircraft GmbH: The multinational company established to manage development and production of the Tornado aircraft. It coordinated industrial work across the three partner nations.
Operation Desert Storm: The 1991 coalition air and ground campaign that expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. British and Italian Tornados flew strike missions during the campaign.
McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle: A United States twin-engine fighter designed primarily for air superiority. The F-15 emphasized air-to-air combat, unlike the Tornado’s original strike focus.
Turbofan: A jet engine that uses a fan to send some airflow around its core, producing thrust efficiently. Two turbofan engines power every Tornado variant.
Multi Role Combat Aircraft: A 1960s European project to develop a common combat aircraft for several national air forces. The Tornado emerged from this program after France withdrew and requirements shifted.
Operation Granby: The British military operation in the 1991 Gulf War, including Royal Air Force Tornado deployments. It was the British service name for the Tornado’s prominent Gulf War deployment.
General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark: A United States variable-sweep-wing aircraft developed for tactical strike and interdiction. The F-111 shared the swing-wing strike concept but came from a separate program.
Tornado IDS: The Interdictor/Strike variant of the Tornado, designed for ground attack and battlefield interdiction. It was the core strike version built for the original low-level attack requirement.
United Kingdom: A sovereign country comprising England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom was a founding partner and major Tornado operator.
