Panel (comics)

A bounded image or image area in a comic that represents a moment in the story. Its placement, size, and relation to neighboring panels shape pacing and meaning.

Gutter (comics): The blank space between comic panels, where readers infer transitions and events. The gap between panels makes the sequence continuous without depicting every moment.
Panel layout: The arrangement of panels on a comic page or screen. Layout determines the order and rhythm in which panels are read.
Silent panel: A comic panel containing no written words or sound effects. Without lettering, the image alone must convey the moment's action or mood.
Tier (comics): A horizontal row of one or more comic panels on a page. A tier groups panels across a row rather than naming one bounded image.
Speech balloon: A drawn enclosure that associates spoken words or thoughts with a character in a comic. Balloon placement within a panel assigns dialogue to characters and guides reading order.
Splash page: A comic page dominated by one large image, often used to introduce a scene or emphasize an event. A single expanded panel can replace the usual sequence to heighten emphasis.
Establishing shot: A view that establishes a scene's setting and spatial relationships. An establishing panel can orient a sequence before closer views follow.
Spread (comics): A pair of facing comic pages designed to be viewed together as one composition. A spread organizes panels across two pages, beyond the scale of an individual panel.
Caption (comics): A text element in a comic that supplies narration, setting, or other information outside dialogue. Captions can establish time, place, or narration within the panel's image.
Inset panel: A small panel placed within the area of a larger comic panel. An inset isolates a detail while keeping it inside the larger moment.
