Panthera hybrid

A big cat produced by crossing two species in the genus Panthera. These hybrids include crosses between lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars.

Panthera: A genus of large cats that includes lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and snow leopards. Its closely related species are the parents of Panthera hybrids.
Liger: A hybrid offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. It is the most familiar Panthera hybrid and often grows unusually large.
Hybrid vigor: An increase in traits such as growth or fertility in some hybrid offspring relative to their parents. It helps explain exceptional size reported in some lion–tiger crosses.
Captive breeding: The controlled reproduction of animals kept in human care. Most documented Panthera hybrids were produced in captivity rather than wild populations.
Lion: A large social cat native to parts of Africa and a small region of India. Lions are one parent in familiar crosses such as ligers and tigons.
Tigon: A hybrid offspring of a male tiger and a female lion. Reversing the parents of a liger produces a different named cross.
Haldane's rule: A pattern in animal hybrids where the sex with unlike sex chromosomes is more often absent, rare, or sterile. It helps explain why male Panthera hybrids are often sterile.
Animal welfare: The physical and mental well-being of animals and the conditions affecting it. Hybrid breeding can involve health risks and welfare concerns for parents and offspring.
Tiger: A large striped cat native to Asia. Tigers are crossed with lions in the best-known Panthera hybrids.
Leopon: A hybrid offspring of a male leopard and a female lion. It shows that lion–leopard crosses have also occurred in captivity.
