Pantoprazole

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses stomach acid by blocking the gastric hydrogen-potassium ATPase. It is used for acid-related disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Proton pump inhibitor: A drug that reduces gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the stomach’s hydrogen-potassium ATPase. Pantoprazole belongs to this drug class and shares its acid-suppressing mechanism.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease: A chronic condition in which stomach contents reflux into the esophagus, causing symptoms or injury. Pantoprazole reduces acid exposure that drives symptoms and esophageal damage.
Famotidine: A histamine H2-receptor antagonist that reduces stomach acid secretion. It acts at histamine receptors rather than directly blocking the proton pump.
Hypomagnesemia: An abnormally low concentration of magnesium in the blood. Rare cases have followed prolonged proton pump inhibitor use, including pantoprazole.
Gastric hydrogen-potassium ATPase: A membrane enzyme that exchanges hydrogen ions for potassium ions to secrete stomach acid. Pantoprazole irreversibly inhibits this enzyme in acid-secreting stomach cells.
Erosive esophagitis: Inflammation and visible injury of the esophageal lining, commonly caused by reflux of stomach contents. Pantoprazole promotes healing by lowering the acidity of refluxed material.
Antacids: Substances that neutralize acid already present in the stomach. They act quickly by neutralization, while pantoprazole suppresses new acid secretion.
Vitamin B12 deficiency: A condition caused by insufficient vitamin B12 for normal blood formation and nervous-system function. Long-term acid suppression may impair release of food-bound vitamin B12.
Parietal cell: A stomach cell that secretes hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor. Pantoprazole concentrates and becomes activated in these acid-secreting cells.
Peptic ulcer disease: Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum caused by disrupted balance between mucosal defenses and damaging factors. Acid suppression supports ulcer healing and can accompany cause-directed treatment.
