Papua conflict

The Papua conflict is an ongoing political and armed struggle between Indonesian authorities and Papuan independence movements over the status of western New Guinea.

Dutch New Guinea: The western half of New Guinea that remained under Dutch rule after Indonesia became independent. Its transfer from Dutch rule became the central dispute over the territory’s future.
Sukarno: Indonesia’s first president, who led the republic from 1945 until 1967. He made the incorporation of Dutch New Guinea a central national objective.
National Liberation Army of West Papua: The armed wing associated with the Free Papua Movement and other Papuan independence factions. Its attacks and Indonesian counteroperations form a major strand of the armed conflict.
