Acne vulgaris : A chronic disorder of hair follicles and sebaceous glands that produces comedones and inflammatory lesions. Inflamed follicles commonly produce papules in acne.
Skin examination : The systematic inspection and palpation of skin, hair, and nails for clinical findings. Clinicians identify papules by assessing elevation, firmness, size, and distribution.
Warts : Benign skin growths caused by human papillomaviruses, often presenting as rough papules. Common warts are a familiar example of virus-associated papules.
Plaque (dermatology) : A broad, raised, flat-topped skin lesion, often formed by merging papules. Papules can enlarge or merge into this broader form.
Lichen planus : An inflammatory disease of skin and mucous membranes that often causes itchy, flat-topped, purple papules. Its characteristic papules arise from an interface inflammatory reaction.
Dermatologic diagnosis : The process of identifying skin disease from clinical features and, when needed, tests. Papule type and arrangement contribute to diagnostic pattern recognition.
Syphilis : A sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Secondary syphilis can produce widespread papular eruptions.
Vesicle : A small, elevated skin lesion containing clear fluid. A vesicle is fluid-filled, whereas a papule is solid.
Molluscum contagiosum : A viral skin infection that produces firm, dome-shaped papules, often with central depressions. The infection creates a recognizable umbilicated papular lesion.
