Paracas culture

An ancient society of Peru’s south coast, flourishing roughly from 800 to 100 BCE. It is known for elaborate textiles, distinctive cranial modification, and complex funerary practices.

Paracas Necropolis: A major Paracas burial complex at Wari Kayan, where bundles containing richly dressed dead were placed in communal tombs. Its crowded tombs provide the clearest evidence for Paracas funerary organization.
Paracas Peninsula: A peninsula on Peru’s south coast, containing archaeological sites and marine environments associated with Paracas. Its coastal setting anchored the society’s archaeological name and regional context.
Backstrap loom: A hand loom anchored between a fixed point and the weaver’s body, used to produce narrow woven cloth. This portable loom suited the production of intricate Paracas fabrics.
