Paracelsus

Paracelsus (1493–1541) was a Swiss physician, alchemist, and natural philosopher who challenged Galenic medicine and promoted chemical remedies and observation of nature.

Galen: Galen was a Greek physician whose writings shaped European and Middle Eastern medicine for centuries. Paracelsus rejected Galenic doctrines that he considered inherited speculation rather than reliable medical knowledge.
Humorism: Humorism explains health and disease through the balance of bodily fluids such as blood and bile. Paracelsus opposed treatments based on balancing humors and proposed different causes of disease.
Three primes: The three primes are salt, sulfur, and mercury, Paracelsus’s principles for interpreting material composition. He used these principles to explain substances and bodily processes beyond the four-element scheme.
Laudanum: Laudanum is an opium tincture used historically as a pain reliever and sedative. Paracelsus is associated with introducing an opium preparation into European medicine, though its later formulations varied.
Andreas Vesalius: Andreas Vesalius was a sixteenth-century anatomist whose dissections challenged traditional accounts of human anatomy. Both physicians questioned ancient authorities, though Vesalius focused on anatomy rather than Paracelsus’s chemical medicine.
Galenism: Galenism is the medical tradition built around Galen’s theories of anatomy, physiology, and treatment. This was the dominant learned medical system Paracelsus openly challenged.
Paracelsian medicine: Paracelsian medicine is a chemical approach to healing inspired by Paracelsus’s theories and practices. It translates his principles into a distinctive medical tradition.
Medical humanism: Medical humanism applied Renaissance textual scholarship to the study and practice of medicine. Paracelsus’s attacks on book learning sharpened debates about textual authority and medical experience.
Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim: Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim was Paracelsus’s birth name. The name reveals the identity behind the shorter name by which he became known.
Alchemy: Alchemy was a historical practice combining material experimentation, medicine, and theories of transformation. Paracelsus drew on alchemical ideas to explain bodily processes and develop remedies.
