Parallax

Parallax is the apparent shift of an object against a more distant background when the observer changes position. Astronomers use measured shifts to estimate distances to nearby stars.

Triangulation: A method of locating a point by measuring angles from known positions. Parallax is a triangulation method using the observer’s changing viewpoint.
Stellar parallax: The apparent annual displacement of a nearby star against more distant stars as Earth orbits the Sun. It is the geometric method underlying the concept’s astronomical use.
Hipparchus: A Greek astronomer of the second century BCE who compiled star positions and developed quantitative astronomy. His failure to detect stellar parallax helped establish the immense scale of the stars.
Stellar aberration: The apparent displacement of a celestial object caused by the combination of light’s finite speed and the observer’s motion. It also shifts apparent star positions, but depends on observer velocity rather than viewpoint separation.
Baseline (surveying): A measured reference distance between two observation points. A longer baseline produces a larger parallax shift for the same object distance.
Gaia (spacecraft): A European Space Agency observatory that measures positions, distances, and motions of stars. Its astrometric measurements use parallax to map the Milky Way.
Tycho Brahe: A Danish astronomer whose precise pre-telescopic observations shaped early modern astronomy. His unsuccessful search for annual stellar parallax supported a geocentric interpretation.
Proper motion: A star’s angular movement across the sky over time, measured relative to distant background objects. It is actual transverse stellar motion, unlike parallax’s viewpoint-driven apparent shift.
Parallax angle: The angle subtended by an object’s apparent displacement between specified viewpoints. This angular measurement encodes the distance in stellar parallax.
Lunar parallax: The apparent shift in the Moon’s position when observed from different points on Earth. It shows how a terrestrial baseline can measure a nearby celestial distance.
