Parallelism

Parallelism is a rhetorical structure that places corresponding words, phrases, or clauses in balanced grammatical relation. It creates rhythm, emphasis, and clarity through repeated form.

Syntax: Syntax is the system of rules governing how words combine into phrases and sentences. Parallel forms depend on repeating comparable syntactic structures.
Anaphora: Anaphora is the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginnings of successive clauses or lines. Its repeated openings create parallel structures across successive units.
I Have a Dream: I Have a Dream is Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 speech advocating racial equality and civil rights. Its repeated opening phrase makes anaphora a defining source of parallel force.
Parataxis: Parataxis places clauses or phrases side by side without subordinating one to another. It concerns the relation between clauses, not necessarily their balanced form.
Clause: A clause is a grammatical unit containing a subject and a predicate. Clauses often provide the balanced units in sentence-level parallelism.
Epistrophe: Epistrophe is the repetition of a word or phrase at the ends of successive clauses or lines. Repeated endings make clause-to-clause parallels especially audible.
Gettysburg Address: The Gettysburg Address is Abraham Lincoln's 1863 speech dedicating a national cemetery during the American Civil War. Its balanced clauses compress a political argument into memorable prose.
Hypotaxis: Hypotaxis arranges clauses in relationships of subordination, with some clauses dependent on others. Subordination creates hierarchy rather than the equal structural balance typical of parallelism.
Phrase: A phrase is a group of words functioning as a unit without forming a complete clause. Parallel phrases can balance within a sentence without repeating full clauses.
Isocolon: Isocolon is a parallel structure whose successive clauses have similar length and grammatical form. It intensifies parallelism by balancing both syntax and clause length.
