Paraphilia : A persistent, intense sexual interest outside typical interest in consensual adult sexual activity. The broader category of interests from which a disorder diagnosis is distinguished.
Clinical assessment : The systematic evaluation of symptoms, functioning, history, and relevant risks in a clinical setting. Assessment establishes whether distress, impairment, or risk meets diagnostic thresholds.
Atypical sexual interest : A sexual interest that is uncommon or differs from prevailing expectations. Atypicality alone does not establish the distress, impairment, or harm required for disorder.
Psychotherapy : Treatment that uses psychological methods to address distress, behavior, or functioning. Therapy can help address distress, manage behavior, and support safer choices.
Medicalization : The process by which human experiences or behaviors become defined and managed as medical problems. Debates about diagnosis examine when atypical sexuality warrants medical classification.

Differential diagnosis : The process of distinguishing among conditions that could explain a person’s presentation. Clinicians consider other explanations before attributing distress or impairment to a paraphilic interest.
Sexual orientation : A person’s enduring pattern of romantic, emotional, or sexual attraction. Orientation is not itself a disorder and should not be conflated with paraphilic diagnosis.
Cognitive behavioral therapy : A structured psychotherapy that targets patterns of thought and behavior linked to current difficulties. It may support coping and behavior-management goals tailored to an individual’s needs.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders : The American Psychiatric Association’s manual for classifying mental disorders and diagnostic criteria. Changes across editions reflect continuing debate about definitions and diagnostic boundaries.
