Parasite ecology

Parasite ecology studies how parasites interact with hosts and environments across populations and ecosystems, including how those interactions shape parasite transmission, host populations, and ecological communities.

Parasite transmission: The movement of parasites between hosts or from environmental sources into hosts. Transmission routes connect parasite life cycles to host contact and environmental exposure.
Parasite: An organism that lives in or on another organism and gains resources at its expense. Parasites are the organisms whose distribution and interactions the field explains.
One Health: An approach recognizing that human, animal, plant, and environmental health are interconnected. Parasites cross these domains, so control often depends on coordinated ecological and public-health action.

Wildlife disease management: The practice of reducing disease impacts in wild animal populations while considering ecosystem effects. Parasite ecology helps anticipate how interventions alter wildlife infections and food webs.
Community ecology: The study of interactions among species living in the same area. Parasites alter competition, predation, and species coexistence within ecological communities.
Plasmodium: A genus of protozoan parasites that cause malaria and are transmitted by mosquitoes. Malaria links parasite transmission to mosquito ecology, human behavior, and environmental conditions.
