Parasitoid

A parasitoid is an organism whose immature stage develops on or inside a single host, eventually killing it in most cases. Unlike a parasite, it typically kills its host as part of its life cycle.

Host location: The process by which an organism detects and finds another organism it can use as a host. Parasitoids use host-derived chemical and physical cues to locate suitable hosts.
Parasitism: An interaction in which one organism benefits by living on or in another, which is harmed. Parasitoid development is a specialized form of parasitic interaction.
Biological pest control: The management of pests using their natural enemies, including predators, parasites, and pathogens. Parasitoids are widely used as natural enemies in pest-control programs.
Trophic cascade: An ecological chain reaction in which effects at one trophic level alter other levels. By reducing herbivore numbers, parasitoids can indirectly change plant communities.
Oviposition: The act of depositing eggs, especially by an insect. Many parasitoids place eggs on or inside a host during egg-laying.
Parasite: An organism that benefits by living on or in a host, usually without killing it quickly. Parasitoids characteristically kill their host, unlike most parasites.
Trichogramma: A genus of tiny parasitoid wasps whose larvae develop inside insect eggs. Trichogramma species are released to suppress moth pests before they hatch.
Coevolution: Reciprocal evolutionary change between interacting species. Hosts and parasitoids evolve interacting adaptations and counter-adaptations.
Koinobiont: A parasitoid that allows its host to continue developing after attack. Koinobionts develop while their hosts remain alive and often continue growing.
Predation: An interaction in which one organism captures and consumes another organism. A parasitoid develops in one host rather than killing and consuming multiple prey.
