Parcham

Parcham was a moderate faction of Afghanistan’s People’s Democratic Party, associated with urban professionals and led by Babrak Karmal. It competed with the party’s more radical Khalq faction.

People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan: A Marxist political party founded in Afghanistan in 1965 that ruled the country from 1978 to 1992. Parcham emerged as one of the party’s two principal factions.
Babrak Karmal: An Afghan communist politician who led Parcham and served as president from 1979 to 1986. He was Parcham’s leading figure and the faction’s most prominent state leader.
Soviet–Afghan War: The 1979–1989 conflict in which Soviet forces supported Afghanistan’s communist government against insurgent groups. The Soviet intervention restored Parcham leaders to power while deepening the war.
Afghan communism: The communist political movement in Afghanistan, organized chiefly through the People’s Democratic Party from 1965. Parcham was one organized current within Afghanistan’s communist movement.
Khalq: The more radical faction of Afghanistan’s People’s Democratic Party, associated with rural networks and leaders Nur Muhammad Taraki and Hafizullah Amin. Its rivalry with Parcham shaped the party’s leadership and Afghan governments.
Hafizullah Amin: An Afghan communist leader of the Khalq faction who ruled Afghanistan briefly in 1979. Amin’s rise intensified the conflict between Khalq and Parcham.
Operation Storm-333: The Soviet operation in December 1979 that killed Hafizullah Amin and installed Babrak Karmal as Afghanistan’s leader. It marked Parcham’s return to power under Soviet military intervention.
Marxism–Leninism: A communist ideology advocating a vanguard party and a revolutionary transition toward socialism. Parcham operated within the party’s Marxist–Leninist framework despite its distinct social base.
Saur Revolution: The April 1978 coup in Afghanistan that brought the People’s Democratic Party to power. The revolution brought Parcham and Khalq into power, but Khalq initially marginalized Parcham.
Mohammad Najibullah: An Afghan politician who led the country from 1986 until the communist government fell in 1992. A former Parcham member, he succeeded Karmal and pursued national reconciliation.
