Pareiasauria

Pareiasauria is an extinct clade of large, heavily armored herbivorous reptiles that lived mainly during the Permian Period. Its members had sprawling limbs, broad bodies, and distinctive skull ornamentation.

Parareptilia: Parareptilia is a diverse group of extinct reptiles and reptile-like amniotes that flourished especially during the Permian. Pareiasaurs are commonly classified within this broader group of early amniotes.
Scutosaurus: Scutosaurus is a large, armored pareiasaur known from Late Permian deposits in Russia. Its extensive osteoderms and robust body exemplify the group's best-known anatomy.
Pareiasaur dentition: Pareiasaur dentition consists of broad, leaf-shaped teeth with multiple cusps suited to processing vegetation. Tooth form provides direct evidence for their plant-based diet.
Permian–Triassic extinction event: The Permian–Triassic extinction event was a mass extinction about 252 million years ago that eliminated most marine species and many terrestrial lineages. Pareiasaurs disappeared around the end-Permian crisis.
Dicynodontia: Dicynodontia is an extinct group of herbivorous therapsids, many of which had beaked jaws and two tusks. Dicynodonts shared Permian habitats with pareiasaurs but belonged to a different amniote lineage.
Amniota: Amniota is the vertebrate clade whose embryos develop within an amnion or structures derived from it. Pareiasaurs belonged to this major group of land-adapted vertebrates.
Pareiasaurus: Pareiasaurus is a genus of large Permian pareiasaurs known from southern Africa. This genus gave Pareiasauria its name and includes early described members.
Jaw mechanics: Jaw mechanics describes how skull shape, muscles, and joints generate and direct biting forces. Their broad skulls and specialized teeth supported effective plant processing.
Pangaea: Pangaea was a supercontinent that assembled during the late Paleozoic and began breaking apart in the Mesozoic. Pareiasaur fossils occur across regions that were joined within this Permian landmass.
Captorhinidae: Captorhinidae is an extinct group of early reptiles, including small to robust herbivores with distinctive multiple tooth rows. Captorhinids were another herbivorous reptile lineage, but lacked pareiasaurs' characteristic body armor.
