Paremiology

Paremiology is the scholarly study of proverbs, examining their forms, meanings, origins, uses, and transmission across communities and time.

Proverb: A concise, traditionally transmitted saying that expresses a general observation or practical judgment. Proverbs are paremiology’s central subject, though definitions vary across traditions.
Proverb variation: The alteration of a proverb’s wording while retaining or adapting its recognizable meaning. Variants reveal how speakers reshape inherited expressions for new situations.
Proverb collection: The gathering and recording of proverbs in manuscripts, books, archives, or databases. Collections preserve evidence for historical study while reflecting their compilers’ choices.
Paremiography: The collection and documentation of proverbs, especially in reference works and archives. It supplies much of the material that paremiological analysis interprets.
Lexicography: The practice and study of compiling dictionaries and describing words and expressions. Dictionary-making may include proverbs, but its central unit is the lexical entry.
Proverbial phrase: A familiar fixed expression that evokes an established saying or image, often without expressing a complete judgment. It lies near the boundary between proverbs and other traditional expressions.
Paremiological minimum: A proposed core set of proverbs widely known within a particular speech community. It offers a way to study which expressions become broadly shared and retained.
Erasmus: A Dutch humanist whose Adagia assembled and interpreted Greek and Latin proverbs. His influential collection shaped European scholarship and the printed circulation of proverbs.
Ethnography of speaking: The study of how speech practices function within particular communities and situations. It situates proverbial meaning in actual social interaction rather than wording alone.
Idiomatology: The study of idioms and other fixed expressions whose meanings are not fully compositional. Idioms overlap with proverbial phrases, but typically do not state general judgments.
