Knowra Parietal lobe Parietal lobe A region of each cerebral hemisphere behind the frontal lobe that integrates sensory information and contributes to spatial awareness, body representation, and attention.
Primary somatosensory cortex : The cortical region that receives and organizes touch, proprioception, temperature, and pain signals from the body. It occupies the postcentral gyrus and provides the lobe’s main map of bodily sensation.
Cerebral cortex : The layered outer sheet of the cerebral hemispheres, supporting perception, cognition, and voluntary action. The parietal lobe is one of the cortex’s major anatomical divisions.
Astereognosis : The inability to identify an object by touch despite adequate basic sensation. Damage to parietal somatosensory association regions can disrupt tactile object recognition.
Frontal lobe : The cerebral lobe anterior to the central sulcus, involved in executive control, planning, and voluntary movement. The central sulcus separates it from the parietal lobe, though both contribute to action.
Somatosensory association cortex : Cortical areas that combine somatic sensations into representations of objects and body parts. These areas interpret incoming touch signals beyond their basic location and intensity.
Cerebral hemisphere : One of the two halves of the cerebrum, each containing frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. Each hemisphere contains its own parietal lobe, with largely contralateral sensory representation.
Hemispatial neglect : A disorder in which a person fails to attend to one side of space, commonly after right-hemisphere injury. Right parietal damage can impair attention to the left side of space.
Temporal lobe : A cerebral lobe involved in auditory processing, language, memory, and aspects of object recognition. It lies below the parietal lobe and emphasizes functions distinct from bodily sensation and spatial mapping.
Posterior parietal cortex : A region that combines sensory information to guide attention, spatial perception, and action. It links visual and body-centered information to movements through space.
Central sulcus : A prominent groove separating the frontal and parietal lobes of each cerebral hemisphere. It marks the anterior boundary of the parietal lobe.
