Paris Basin

The Paris Basin is a broad sedimentary basin in northern France, centered on Paris. Its layered Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks preserve extensive marine and terrestrial fossil deposits.

Sedimentary basin: A broad region where subsidence allows sediment to accumulate and become a thick sequence of sedimentary rock. The Paris Basin is a classic intracratonic example of this geological structure.
Intracratonic basin: A sedimentary basin formed within the relatively stable interior of a continental plate. The Paris Basin developed far from an active plate boundary.
Lutetian limestone: A widespread Eocene limestone formed from marine sediments in the Paris region. It is a characteristic building stone and fossil-bearing unit of the basin.
Georges Cuvier: A French naturalist who established comparative anatomy and helped found vertebrate paleontology. His studies of Montmartre fossils connected anatomical evidence with successive strata.
Stratigraphy: The study of rock layers, their relationships, and their sequence through geological time. The basin’s fossil record is organized and dated through its stratigraphic layers.
Basin subsidence: The gradual downward movement of a region’s crust that creates space for sediment to accumulate. Long-term subsidence provided accommodation space for the basin’s thick sedimentary succession.
Montmartre gypsum: Eocene gypsum deposits once extensively quarried beneath Montmartre in Paris. These deposits preserve terrestrial and freshwater fossils from the basin’s Eocene landscapes.
Alexandre Brongniart: A French chemist and geologist who collaborated with Cuvier on the geology of the Paris region. He helped map the basin’s strata and interpret their fossil succession.
Cenozoic: The geological era beginning about 66 million years ago and continuing to the present. Many of the basin’s celebrated fossil deposits formed during this era.
Marine transgression: The landward advance of the sea over previously exposed land. Repeated marine incursions spread shallow seas across parts of the basin.
