Paris Observatory

The Paris Observatory is a French astronomical institution founded in 1667. It became a center for positional astronomy, geodesy, timekeeping, and the study of celestial phenomena.

Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, whose reign expanded royal patronage of science and the arts. He authorized the observatory as part of a broader program of royal scientific institutions.
Meridian circle: A telescope mounted to measure the positions of celestial objects as they cross the local meridian. Meridian instruments supported the precise positional astronomy pursued at the observatory.
Urbain Le Verrier: French mathematician and astronomer who predicted Neptune’s position from irregularities in Uranus’s orbit. As observatory director, he made the institution central to the celebrated prediction and discovery of Neptune.
Neptune: The eighth planet from the Sun, discovered in 1846 after its position was predicted from orbital irregularities. Le Verrier’s prediction from the observatory prompted Johann Galle’s discovery of the planet.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert: French statesman who served Louis XIV and promoted economic, administrative, and scientific projects. Colbert organized the royal initiative that led to the observatory’s foundation.
Paris meridian: The north–south reference line passing through the Paris Observatory, used in French geodesy and mapping. Observations along this reference line linked astronomy to the measurement of France.
Pierre Janssen: French astronomer who pioneered solar spectroscopy and founded the Meudon astrophysical observatory. His work and institution helped broaden the Paris Observatory network toward astrophysics.
French meridian: A geodetic reference line through France used to measure longitude and map the country. The observatory’s positional astronomy supported the meridian’s role in national surveying.
French Academy of Sciences: A French learned society founded in 1666 to advance and advise on scientific research. Founded just before the observatory, it supplied a closely connected institutional setting for its work.
French meridian arc measurement: Geodetic surveys measuring distances along a meridian in France to determine Earth's shape and dimensions. Observatory astronomers combined celestial positions with ground surveys to measure the meridian arc.
