Park and ride

A transport facility or scheme where people leave private cars and continue by public transit, carpool, or another shared mode. It connects driving routes with shared transport to reduce car trips into congested areas.

Intermodal passenger transport: Passenger travel that combines two or more modes within one journey. Park and ride is a specific way to transfer from private driving to shared transport.
Commuter rail: Passenger rail service designed mainly for travel between suburbs and urban employment centers. Stations outside city centers often pair commuter trains with large parking lots.
Traffic congestion: A condition in which demand for road space slows or obstructs vehicle movement. The scheme aims to divert some traffic before cars reach congested destinations.
Kiss and ride: A travel arrangement in which someone is driven to a transit stop and dropped off without parking. It provides car access to transit but does not require a parked vehicle or long-term space.
Transit-oriented development: Urban development concentrated around public transport stations, with walkable streets and limited reliance on cars. It brings homes and destinations to transit, whereas park and ride brings drivers to transit.
Light rail: Urban rail transit using electric trains that usually run at street level or on dedicated tracks. Outer light-rail stations can serve as park-and-ride transfer points for suburban drivers.
Induced demand: An increase in travel demand caused by changes that make travel faster or easier. A parking facility can attract additional car trips, offsetting some reduction in central traffic.
Bike and ride: A travel arrangement that combines cycling to a transit stop with onward travel by public transport. It uses a bicycle rather than a car for the access leg to transit.
Feeder bus: A local bus service that carries passengers to or from a larger transit route or station. It can extend a station’s catchment beyond walking and cycling distance from the parking lot.
Bus rapid transit: A bus-based transit system using dedicated lanes and station features to improve speed and reliability. Park-and-ride lots can feed passengers onto fast, high-capacity bus corridors.
