Parlement of Paris

The Parlement of Paris was the French monarchy’s highest court of appeal and a body that registered royal edicts, chiefly for the Paris region.

Lit de justice: A formal royal session in which the king presided over a parlement and could compel registration of an edict. It allowed the crown to overcome the Parlement of Paris’s resistance to registering royal legislation.
Curia Regis: The medieval king’s council, from which several European institutions of government and justice developed. The Parlement emerged as royal judicial business separated from the king’s broader council.
Fronde: A series of French civil wars and rebellions from 1648 to 1653 against royal authority. The Parlement’s opposition to royal taxation helped trigger the Fronde parlementaire.
French Council of State: A French government body that advises the executive and serves as the highest court for administrative justice. Unlike the Parlement, it was an advisory and administrative institution rather than a royal court of appeal under the Old Regime.
Remonstrance: A formal objection submitted by a French parlement against a royal edict before or after its registration. The Parlement used remonstrances to explain why it opposed registering an edict.
Philip IV of France: King of France from 1285 to 1314, whose reign strengthened royal administration and justice. His reign helped establish the Parlement as a permanent institution in Paris.
Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, who established an exceptionally centralized monarchy. His rule curtailed the Parlement’s political influence and constrained its remonstrances.
Parlement of Aix-en-Provence: A sovereign court established in Provence in 1501, modeled on the Parlement of Paris. Its provincial jurisdiction contrasts with the Paris court’s extensive central role.
Letters patent: Open royal documents that promulgated decisions, privileges, offices, or laws. Royal edicts commonly required registration by the Parlement before taking effect in its jurisdiction.
French royal justice: The system of courts and procedures through which the French crown exercised judicial authority. The Parlement became the leading court within this expanding system.
