Parmenides

Parmenides was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher who argued that reality is a single, unchanging being and that change belongs to deceptive appearance.

Being: The condition or fact of existing; in metaphysics, the subject of inquiry into what it means to be. Parmenides makes being the sole subject of genuine thought and speech.
On Nature: A didactic poem by Parmenides that presents arguments about being and an account of mortal beliefs. It is the surviving source for both his argument and his cosmology.
Eleatic school: A group of ancient Greek philosophers associated with Elea and arguments denying plurality or change. Parmenides is its earliest central figure, and his arguments shaped its later members.
Zeno of Elea: A Greek philosopher of the fifth century BCE known for paradoxes challenging motion and plurality. Zeno defended Eleatic ideas with paradoxes that made motion appear contradictory.

Empedocles: A pre-Socratic philosopher who explained nature through four enduring elements combined and separated by opposing forces. His theory preserves Parmenidean permanence while accounting for observable change through mixture.
Parmenides' cosmology: The poem’s account of the ordered world of appearances, including its cosmic structure and opposing principles. Scholars debate whether this account is merely false opinion or a serious physical theory.
