Paromomycin

Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupting protein synthesis. It is used mainly against intestinal parasites, especially Entamoeba histolytica and Leishmania species, and can treat selected bacterial infections.

Aminoglycoside: A class of antibiotics that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit. Paromomycin belongs to this antibiotic class and shares its ribosomal target.
Amebiasis: Infection caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. Oral paromomycin treats intestinal infection by eliminating parasites in the gut.
Aminoglycoside antibiotics: Antibiotics containing amino sugars linked by glycosidic bonds that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. This broader drug family supplies paromomycin’s defining structure and pharmacology.
Neomycin: An aminoglycoside antibiotic used mainly in topical and oral formulations because systemic use is highly toxic. It is a close structural relative with different common clinical uses.
30S ribosomal subunit: The small bacterial ribosomal subunit that reads messenger RNA during translation. Paromomycin binds this subunit and interferes with accurate translation.
Leishmaniasis: A group of diseases caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Parenteral paromomycin is used for visceral leishmaniasis in some regions.
Ribosome: A molecular machine that translates messenger RNA into proteins. The ribosome is the shared cellular target behind paromomycin’s antibacterial effect.
Gentamicin: An aminoglycoside antibiotic used systemically to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Unlike paromomycin, it is commonly administered for systemic bacterial infections.
Bacterial translation: The cellular process that uses ribosomes to synthesize proteins from messenger RNA. Disrupting translation is the basis of paromomycin’s antibacterial action.
Cryptosporidiosis: An intestinal illness caused by protozoa of the genus Cryptosporidium. Paromomycin has been studied and used in selected cases, though efficacy is limited.
