The gradual separation of Christianity from Judaism into distinct religions during the first centuries CE, shaped by disputes over law, identity, worship, and communal boundaries.

Council of Jerusalem: An early Christian meeting, described in Acts, that addressed whether gentile converts had to observe Jewish law. Its decision to admit gentiles without full Torah observance widened Christianity’s distance from Jewish communal practice.
Second Temple Judaism: The diverse forms of Jewish religion and society during the Second Temple period, from the sixth century BCE to 70 CE. Christianity emerged within this varied Jewish world rather than from a single uniform tradition.
Paul the Apostle: An early Christian missionary and letter-writer who argued that gentiles could join Christ-following communities without becoming Jews. His missions and letters helped establish gentile Christianity beyond the obligations of the Torah.

Birkat haMinim: A rabbinic blessing against heretics incorporated into the Jewish Amidah prayer, with disputed dating and scope. Later traditions connect it to excluding certain Jewish followers of Jesus from synagogue worship.
Destruction of the Second Temple: The Roman destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE during the First Jewish–Roman War. The loss of the Temple reshaped Jewish religious life as Jesus-following groups also developed beyond Judea.
