Partitions of Poland

The three territorial divisions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth by Russia, Prussia, and Austria in 1772, 1793, and 1795, which ended the state’s existence.

Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A multinational state formed by Poland and Lithuania in 1569 and dissolved in 1795. The state divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria in the three partitions.
First Partition of Poland: The 1772 division of Commonwealth territory among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. It began the sequence of territorial divisions that ultimately erased the Commonwealth.
Constitution of 3 May 1791: A constitution adopted by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1791 to strengthen government and reform its political system. Its reforms provoked opposition and preceded the second partition.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty between Germany and the Allied powers that ended the First World War. Unlike the partitions, it restored an independent Poland after the First World War.
Liberum veto: A parliamentary rule in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth allowing any deputy to block legislation and dissolve a session. Its use helped paralyze the Commonwealth’s central government before the partitions.
Third Partition of Poland: The 1795 division of the remaining Commonwealth territory among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. It completed the partitions and ended the Commonwealth’s existence.
Polish Legions (Napoleonic period): Polish military formations established in Italy in 1797 to fight alongside France against powers that had partitioned Poland. They carried hopes of restoring Polish statehood after the Commonwealth disappeared.
Union of Lublin: The 1569 agreement that united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in a commonwealth. It created the state whose territory was later divided by neighboring powers.
Bar Confederation: A 1768–1772 armed league of Polish nobles opposing Russian influence and King Stanisław August Poniatowski. Its revolt and suppression preceded the first partition.
Sejm of Grodno: The 1793 Commonwealth parliament compelled by Russian troops to ratify the second partition. Its forced ratification gave the second partition a formal legal instrument.
