Pascal (unit)

The pascal is the SI unit of pressure, equal to one newton per square metre. It is named after the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal.

Pressure: The force exerted per unit area on a surface. The pascal is the SI unit used to measure pressure.
Bar (unit): A metric unit of pressure equal to 100,000 pascals. The bar is a convenient larger unit often used where pascals would produce large numbers.
Blaise Pascal: A seventeenth-century French mathematician, physicist, inventor, and philosopher. The pressure unit bears his name in recognition of his work on fluids and pressure.
Dimensional analysis: The use of physical dimensions to check equations and derive relations among quantities. It verifies that force divided by area has the dimensions of pressure.
Newton (unit): The SI unit of force, equal to one kilogram metre per second squared. A pascal is one newton of force distributed over one square metre.
Atmosphere (unit): A non-SI unit of pressure defined as 101,325 pascals. It approximates standard atmospheric pressure and provides a familiar comparison.
Pascal's principle: The principle that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished throughout it. Pascal’s name became associated with pressure partly through this principle.
Stress (mechanics): The internal force per unit area within a material under load. Stress and pressure share the same SI unit, though stress can be direction-dependent.
Square metre: The SI unit of area, equal to the area of a square with one-metre sides. Its area is the denominator in the pascal’s defining unit expression.
Torr: A pressure unit equal to one 760th of a standard atmosphere. It is common in vacuum technology, where pascal values can be very small.
