Pasquale Paoli

Pasquale Paoli (1725–1807) was a Corsican patriot and statesman who led the island’s independence movement and governed the Corsican Republic from 1755 to 1769.

Corsican Revolution: The mid-18th-century uprising that ended Genoese control over much of Corsica and established a short-lived independent republic. The revolt created the political opening through which Paoli became Corsica’s leading statesman.
Corsican Constitution of 1755: The constitution adopted under Paoli that established representative institutions for the Corsican Republic. It gave legal form to the republic Paoli governed.
James Boswell: A Scottish writer whose 1768 book publicized Paoli and the Corsican independence cause in Britain. Boswell’s account made Paoli a celebrated figure among British readers.
