Pass laws

Pass laws were South African laws that required Black people to carry documents controlling where they could live, work, and travel. They enforced racial segregation and restricted access to cities.

Dompas: A pass document that Black South Africans were required to carry under pass laws. The document made the restrictions enforceable during routine police checks.
Cape Colony: A British colony in southern Africa that existed from 1806 until the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910. Colonial authorities there introduced early controls on African movement and labor.
Lilian Ngoyi: A South African anti-apartheid activist and one of the leaders of the 1956 Women's March. She helped lead the march against pass laws by thousands of women.
Women's March (South Africa): A 1956 protest in Pretoria where about 20,000 women petitioned against pass laws. The march directly opposed plans to require Black women to carry passes.
Sharpeville: A town in Gauteng, South Africa, where police killed protesters on 21 March 1960. The massacre made the town an enduring symbol of resistance to pass laws.
Natives (Urban Areas) Act, 1923: A South African law that regulated Black African residence and employment in urban areas. It established urban controls that later pass-law systems expanded.
Natives Land Act, 1913: A South African law that restricted African land ownership and residence to designated areas. Land dispossession and movement controls reinforced each other.
Helen Joseph: A South African anti-apartheid activist who helped organize the 1956 Women's March. Her organizing connected women's resistance to the pass system.
Sharpeville massacre: The 1960 killing of 69 people by police during a protest against pass laws in Sharpeville, South Africa. The killings exposed the lethal force used to enforce the system.
Forced removals in South Africa: The coerced relocation of millions of people under South African segregation and apartheid policies. Pass controls and residential restrictions helped enforce racial separation and displacement.
