Path dependence

Path dependence is a process in which earlier choices constrain later options and outcomes. It explains how sequences of events can produce persistent patterns that later conditions alone cannot predict.

Increasing returns: A process in which the benefits of adopting something rise as its adoption becomes more widespread. Adoption can become self-reinforcing, amplifying an early advantage.
QWERTY: The keyboard layout designed for typewriters that became the standard layout for many modern keyboards. Its persistence is a frequently debated example of technological path dependence.
Paul David: An economic historian known for influential work on technological change and path dependence. His analysis of QWERTY helped bring path dependence into economic debate.

Determinism: The view that events are fixed by prior conditions together with the laws governing them. Path dependence allows early events to matter without claiming outcomes were inevitable.
Switching cost: A cost a person or organization incurs when changing from one product, provider, or system to another. High costs of changing course help lock in earlier choices.
Railway gauge: The distance between the inner sides of the two rails of a railway track. Early gauge decisions can constrain later network expansion and interoperability.
