Pathology

Pathology is the study of disease, including its causes and the structural and functional changes it produces in organisms.

Etiology: Etiology is the study or identification of the causes of disease. It identifies the causes that pathology connects to disease changes.
Lesion: A lesion is an abnormal area of tissue caused by disease or injury. Pathologists describe diseases through the locations and features of their lesions.
Surgical pathology: Surgical pathology diagnoses disease by examining tissues removed during surgery or biopsy. It applies tissue examination to tumors, inflammatory disorders, and other lesions.
Hippocrates: Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician whose writings helped establish natural explanations for illness. His approach helped frame disease as a process with observable causes and outcomes.
Clinical medicine: Clinical medicine is the practice of preventing, diagnosing, and treating illness in individual patients. It acts on disease in patients, while pathology focuses on its causes and manifestations.
Pathogenesis: Pathogenesis is the biological sequence through which a disease develops and progresses. It explains how causes produce the changes pathology examines.
Histopathology: Histopathology is the microscopic examination of tissue to identify disease-related changes. It reveals cellular and tissue patterns that define many diagnoses.
Autopsy: An autopsy is a systematic examination of a body after death to determine disease or cause of death. It can reveal disease processes that were unclear during life.
Giovanni Battista Morgagni: Giovanni Battista Morgagni was an Italian physician who linked clinical symptoms to anatomical findings in the eighteenth century. His work established the value of locating disease in specific organs.
Epidemiology: Epidemiology studies the distribution and determinants of health conditions in populations. It explains patterns across populations rather than primarily examining individual specimens.
