Patriot Act

The USA PATRIOT Act is a 2001 U.S. federal law that expanded government investigative and surveillance powers after the September 11 attacks.

Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act: A provision that authorized orders for the production of certain business records in terrorism investigations. It became the act’s most prominent basis for bulk collection of telephone metadata.
September 11 attacks: A coordinated terrorist attack by al-Qaeda on the United States on September 11, 2001. The attacks created the immediate political impetus for the law.
