Paul Baran

Paul Baran (1926–2011) was a Polish-American engineer who developed packet-switching ideas and designed a survivable, decentralized communications network at RAND Corporation.

Packet switching: A communications method that divides data into packets sent independently across a network and reassembled at their destination. Baran proposed dividing messages into blocks that could travel along alternative routes.
RAND Corporation: An American nonprofit research organization established to provide analysis and advice on national security and public policy. Baran developed his network proposals while working at RAND.
Donald Davies: A British computer scientist who independently developed packet-switching ideas and helped build the NPL network. Davies independently proposed packet switching and helped establish its practical terminology.
ARPANET: A U.S. research computer network launched in 1969 that pioneered packet switching and preceded the Internet. ARPANET adopted packet switching, though its design was not a direct implementation of Baran’s network.
Distributed network: A network whose functions and resources are spread across multiple interconnected nodes rather than centralized at one point. Baran’s survivable design distributed communication across many connected nodes.
Cold War: The geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union from the late 1940s to 1991. Concern about nuclear attack shaped the demand for communications that could survive disruption.
Leonard Kleinrock: An American computer scientist whose work on queueing theory and packet networks influenced early computer networking. Kleinrock’s theoretical work provided a separate foundation for packet-network analysis.
Internet: The global system of interconnected computer networks that communicate using the Internet protocol suite. The Internet embodies packet-based communication, a principle Baran helped develop.
Store-and-forward: A networking method in which an intermediary receives a complete message or packet before forwarding it onward. Intermediate nodes could hold and relay packets when a direct route was unavailable.
