Paul Broca

Paul Broca (1824–1880) was a French physician and anthropologist whose study of patients with impaired speech linked language production to a region of the left frontal lobe.

Leborgne (Tan): A patient of Paul Broca who understood much speech but could produce almost only the syllable “tan.” His preserved brain lesion became Broca’s landmark evidence connecting left frontal damage to impaired speech.
Aphasia: An acquired impairment of language caused by damage to the brain’s language networks. Broca’s patients displayed a form of aphasia that shaped the study of language and brain lesions.
Marc Dax: A French physician who argued that speech disorders were associated with lesions in the left cerebral hemisphere. His earlier claims anticipate the lateralization Broca established through clinical and anatomical cases.

Carl Wernicke: A German neurologist who linked fluent but poorly understood speech to damage in the left posterior temporal lobe. His work extended localization from Broca’s speech-production findings to language comprehension.
Left-hemisphere language dominance: The tendency for language functions to rely more heavily on the left cerebral hemisphere, especially in right-handed people. Broca’s cases helped connect language impairment with left-sided brain injury.
Broca’s area: A region of the left inferior frontal gyrus associated with speech production and language processing. The region takes its name from Broca’s interpretation of his patients’ brain lesions.
Wernicke’s area: A left temporal-lobe region classically associated with language comprehension. Its contrasting role helped establish a distinction between speech production and comprehension.
