Paul Ehrlich

Paul Ehrlich (1854–1915) was a German physician and scientist whose work shaped immunology, hematology, and chemotherapy. He developed selective staining methods and helped establish Salvarsan as a treatment for syphilis.

Shibasaburo Kitasato: A Japanese physician and bacteriologist who co-discovered the diphtheria antitoxin with Emil von Behring. His work with Behring helped establish antitoxins, a research direction Ehrlich later advanced.
Side-chain theory: Ehrlich’s theory that cells bear chemical side chains that bind specific toxins and are released as antibodies. It explained how cells could generate antibodies with selective binding.
Salvarsan: An arsenical drug introduced in 1910 for treating syphilis, also known as arsphenamine or compound 606. It was the first widely used chemotherapeutic agent developed through Ehrlich’s systematic testing.
Breslau: A city in present-day Poland, historically known by its German name Breslau. Ehrlich studied medicine at the University of Breslau before pursuing laboratory research.

Robert Koch: A German physician and microbiologist who established methods for identifying disease-causing bacteria. Koch’s laboratory provided Ehrlich an early setting for bacteriological research.
Paul Ehrlich Institute: A German federal research institute responsible for vaccines, biomedicines, and related regulatory science. Named for Ehrlich, it continues German research and oversight in areas linked to his legacy.
