Paul Reuter

Paul Reuter (1816–1899) was a German-born British entrepreneur who founded the Reuters news agency in London in 1851, building its early business around fast transmission of financial and political news.

Aachen: A city in western Germany near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Reuter used Aachen as an early hub for transmitting stock-market news across borders.
Carrier pigeon: A domesticated pigeon trained to carry messages back to a home location. Reuter used pigeons to bridge a telegraph gap between Aachen and Brussels.
Baron de Reuter: The hereditary title granted to Paul Reuter in 1871, later associated with his family. Reuter became Baron de Reuter after establishing his agency’s international reputation.
Associated Press: A nonprofit news cooperative founded in the United States in 1846. Like Reuters, the Associated Press pooled reporting and distributed it to subscribing outlets.
Cologne: A major city on the Rhine in western Germany. Reuter’s early publishing and business experience included work in Cologne.
Electric telegraph: A system that sends coded messages over wires using electrical signals. The electric telegraph later replaced Reuter’s pigeons on key news routes.
Herbert de Reuter: Paul Reuter’s son, who succeeded him in leading the Reuters news agency. Herbert continued the agency’s leadership after Paul Reuter’s retirement.
Agence France-Presse: A French international news agency established in its modern form in 1944. AFP belongs to the agency tradition in which Reuters became a leading international service.
London: The capital of the United Kingdom, situated on the River Thames. Reuter established his news agency in London in 1851.
Submarine communications cable: A cable laid underwater to carry telegraph or telecommunications signals between land stations. Undersea cables let Reuters distribute news across the English Channel and beyond.
