Paul Scoon

Paul Scoon was Grenada’s governor-general from 1978 to 1992, serving as the island’s constitutional head of state through revolution, invasion, and political transition.

Eric Gairy: Eric Gairy was Grenada’s first prime minister and a central political figure before the 1979 revolution. Scoon served as governor-general during Gairy’s final years in office.
Governor-general: A governor-general is a monarch’s representative who performs constitutional and ceremonial duties in a Commonwealth realm. Scoon held this office as Grenada’s representative of Queen Elizabeth II.
Grenadian Revolution: The Grenadian Revolution was the 1979 seizure of power by the New Jewel Movement and the government it established. It removed Gairy’s government while Scoon remained governor-general.

Bernard Coard: Bernard Coard was a Grenadian politician who became deputy prime minister under Maurice Bishop. The 1983 factional crisis involving Coard culminated in Scoon’s appeal for outside intervention.
Westminster system: The Westminster system is a parliamentary model in which executive government depends on the confidence of the legislature. Grenada’s constitutional arrangements placed Scoon within a parliamentary model.
