Paul Vidal de La Blache

Paul Vidal de La Blache (1845–1918) was a French geographer who founded the French school of human geography and helped shape modern regional geography.

Possibilism: A geographical approach that treats environments as setting possibilities and constraints rather than dictating human societies. It names the alternative to environmental determinism that became associated with Vidal’s approach.
Regional geography: The study of the distinctive characteristics and relationships that make areas geographically coherent. Vidal’s regional method treated each area as an integrated combination of nature and human life.
