Pavel Alexandrov

Pavel Alexandrov (1896–1982) was a Soviet mathematician whose work helped establish point-set topology and algebraic topology in the Soviet Union. He is especially associated with the one-point compactification of locally compact Hausdorff spaces.

Topology: The mathematical study of properties preserved under continuous deformation. Alexandrov’s work helped establish topology as a major field in the Soviet Union.
Alexandrov compactification: The compact space formed by adjoining one point to a noncompact locally compact Hausdorff space. This construction is the result most directly attached to Alexandrov’s name.
Andrey Kolmogorov: A Soviet mathematician who made foundational contributions to probability theory and several other fields. Kolmogorov was Alexandrov’s close collaborator and a central figure in Moscow mathematics.

Lev Pontryagin: A Soviet mathematician known for work in topology, topological groups, and optimal control. Pontryagin belonged to the same Moscow school and helped develop Soviet topology.
Point-set topology: The study of topological spaces through open sets, convergence, and related structures. His work on compactness and separation properties belongs to this foundational branch.
Dimension theory: The study of ways to assign and characterize dimension for topological spaces. Alexandrov made major contributions to the development of dimension theory.
