Pavel Cherenkov

Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov was a Soviet physicist whose observations of blue light from irradiated liquids led to the discovery of Cherenkov radiation. He shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for work explaining and interpreting the effect.

Sergei Vavilov: A Soviet physicist who directed the laboratory where Cherenkov studied light emitted by irradiated liquids. Vavilov supervised the experiments that led Cherenkov to recognize the radiation as a distinct phenomenon.
Cherenkov radiation: Electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle travels through a medium faster than light travels in that medium. This is the phenomenon Cherenkov first identified through its visible blue glow.
Cherenkov detector: A particle detector that identifies or measures charged particles through the light they emit in a medium. These instruments turn Cherenkov’s observed light into measurements of particle velocity and identity.
Cherenkov effect: The emission of light by a charged particle moving faster than light travels through a material medium. Cherenkov’s experimental work established the effect that later received his name.
Igor Tamm: A Soviet theoretical physicist who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for explaining Cherenkov radiation. Tamm supplied a theoretical account of the radiation Cherenkov observed.
Refractive index: A measure of how much a material slows light relative to its speed in vacuum. The refractive index determines the medium’s light-speed threshold for producing the radiation.
Ring-imaging Cherenkov detector: A detector that reconstructs a particle’s Cherenkov cone as a ring to measure its velocity. Ring images apply the cone geometry of Cherenkov radiation to particle identification.
Pavel Cherenkov Nobel lecture: Cherenkov’s 1958 Nobel lecture recounting the discovery and study of the radiation named after him. His account describes the experiments and observations behind the discovery.
Ilya Frank: A Soviet physicist who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for explaining Cherenkov radiation. Frank developed the theory with Tamm that connected Cherenkov’s observations to charged particles moving through matter.
Mach cone: A conical disturbance formed when an object moves through a medium faster than waves in that medium. Cherenkov light forms a cone analogous to the shock waves behind a supersonic object.
