Pax Romana

The Pax Romana was a period of relative peace and stability across the Roman Empire, conventionally dated from Augustus’s rise to power in 27 BCE to Marcus Aurelius’s death in 180 CE.

Augustus: The first Roman emperor, who established the Principate after defeating his rivals in civil war. His settlement of power in 27 BCE conventionally marks the Pax Romana’s beginning.
Roman civil wars: A series of internal conflicts that repeatedly divided the Roman Republic and early Empire. The Pax Romana followed the civil wars that ended the Republic’s political order.
Marcus Aurelius: Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE and a Stoic philosopher known for his Meditations. His death conventionally marks the Pax Romana’s end.

Boudican revolt: A major uprising against Roman rule in Britain around 60–61 CE, led by Boudica. The revolt shows that provincial peace could be disrupted by violent resistance.
