PC Card

A removable peripheral card standard for portable computers, defined by the PCMCIA and later PC Card specifications. It enabled compact memory, communications, and other expansion devices.

PCMCIA: The Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, which developed and maintained standards for PC Cards. It established the specifications that defined the card’s dimensions, connectors, and interfaces.
PC Card modem: A modem built as a PC Card for connecting a portable computer to telephone networks. It gave laptops dial-up connectivity without a built-in modem.
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association: An industry association formed to develop standards for small expansion cards in personal computers. Its work produced the specification from which PC Card developed.
ExpressCard: A later laptop expansion-card standard based on PCI Express and USB interfaces. It succeeded PC Card with a different electrical architecture and higher potential bandwidth.
16-bit PC Card: An early PC Card type using a 16-bit interface derived from the ISA bus. This type supported common memory and peripheral cards in early implementations.
PC Card network adapter: A network interface card in PC Card form, commonly used for Ethernet or wireless networking. It added wired or wireless network access through the expansion slot.
JEIDA memory card standard: A Japanese standard for memory cards in portable computers, developed by the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association. It was a parallel effort whose specifications converged with PCMCIA’s.
CompactFlash: A removable storage-card format that uses an interface derived from PC Card technology. It retained related connector and interface ideas while targeting cameras and storage devices.
CardBus: A 32-bit PC Card interface using the PCI bus and supporting bus mastering. It extended the standard for faster peripherals and direct memory access.
PC Card memory card: A PC Card device that provides nonvolatile or volatile storage for a portable computer. Memory expansion and removable storage were central uses of the standard.
