Peace of Augsburg

The 1555 settlement within the Holy Roman Empire that recognized Catholicism and Lutheranism and let each territorial ruler choose between them.

Cuius regio, eius religio: A principle that a ruler determines the religion practiced in the ruler’s territory. It summarizes the settlement’s transfer of religious choice to territorial rulers.
Diet of Augsburg (1530): An imperial assembly where Protestant princes presented the Augsburg Confession to Charles V. Its unresolved religious dispute foreshadowed the settlement reached at Augsburg 25 years later.
Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler who governed the Holy Roman Empire from 1519 to 1556. His efforts to preserve religious unity gave way to acceptance of a negotiated imperial settlement.
Augsburg Confession: The 1530 statement of Lutheran belief presented to Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg. Recognition of its adherents gave Lutheranism formal standing within the empire.

Schmalkaldic League: An alliance of Protestant princes and cities formed in 1531 to defend their religious and political interests. Its resistance to Charles V helped turn the imperial religious divide into armed conflict.
Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler who succeeded Charles V as emperor in 1558 and negotiated the 1555 settlement as king of the Romans. He led the negotiations that secured agreement from the empire’s estates.
Peace of Westphalia: The 1648 treaties that ended the Thirty Years’ War and reshaped religious and political arrangements in the empire. They later extended imperial recognition to Reformed Christians, whom the 1555 settlement had excluded.
Edict of Nantes: The 1598 French royal edict that granted limited rights to Huguenots while maintaining Catholicism as the kingdom’s official religion. It protected a minority’s worship within a kingdom, rather than assigning territorial religion to rulers.
