Peace of Utrecht

The Peace of Utrecht is a series of treaties concluded in 1713–1715 that ended most of the War of the Spanish Succession and redistributed territories and claims among European powers.

War of the Spanish Succession: A European and colonial war fought from 1701 to 1714 over the Spanish throne and the European balance of power. The treaties ended this conflict and settled its central succession dispute.
Philip V of Spain: The first Bourbon king of Spain, who ruled from 1700 to 1746, except for a brief abdication. His recognition as king was accepted alongside his renunciation of claims to the French throne.
Charles II of Spain: The last Habsburg king of Spain, whose death without an heir in 1700 triggered a succession crisis. His will naming Philip of Anjou as heir set the succession conflict in motion.
Treaty of the Pyrenees: A 1659 peace treaty ending the Franco-Spanish War and establishing a new boundary and dynastic arrangement between France and Spain. Unlike Utrecht, it settled an earlier conflict between the same rival monarchies.
Treaty of Utrecht (Great Britain–Spain): A 1713 treaty in which Spain recognized Britain’s gains and granted it the asiento and a limited trade concession. This bilateral agreement set out major British gains from Spain.
Treaty of Rastatt: A 1714 treaty between France and Austria that concluded their hostilities in the War of the Spanish Succession. It extended the settlement to the Habsburg emperor, who had not signed the 1713 Utrecht treaties.
Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg ruler of the Holy Roman Empire from 1711 to 1740 and claimant to the Spanish throne during the succession war. His refusal to accept the Utrecht terms meant separate treaties were needed to end the war with Austria.
Grand Alliance: A coalition formed in 1701 by the Dutch Republic, England, and the Holy Roman Empire against French expansion. Its members fought to prevent Bourbon control of both France and Spain.
Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668): A 1668 treaty ending the War of Devolution between France and Spain and dividing conquered territory in the Spanish Netherlands. It illustrates an earlier territorial settlement that did not resolve the later Spanish succession crisis.
Treaty of Utrecht (Great Britain–France): A 1713 treaty between Britain and France that settled territorial and dynastic terms of the war. It secured British recognition of the Protestant succession and transfers including Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
