Pechora River

The Pechora is a major river in northeastern European Russia that flows north into the Barents Sea. Its basin includes extensive wetlands, forests, and tundra.

Ural Mountains: A mountain range forming part of the conventional boundary between Europe and Asia. The Pechora rises on the western slopes of the Northern Urals.
European Russia: The western portion of Russia, conventionally defined as the territory west of the Ural Mountains. The Pechora flows entirely through Russia’s northeastern European region.
River Transport: The movement of people and goods along rivers by boats and other watercraft. The Pechora has historically served as a transport route across remote northern territory.
Pechora-Kama Canal: A proposed canal project intended to connect the Pechora and Kama river systems. The proposal raised questions about diverting Pechora water beyond its natural basin.
Ilych River: A river in the Komi Republic that flows into the Pechora. It is one of the Pechora’s major tributaries, joining it near the upper basin.
Komi Republic: A federal republic of Russia located west of the Northern Urals. Most of the Pechora’s middle course lies within Komi.
Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve: A protected area in the Komi Republic encompassing taiga and mountain landscapes in the Pechora basin. The reserve protects ecosystems around the upper Pechora and Ilych rivers.
Northern Dvina River: A river in northwestern Russia that flows into the White Sea. It is another major Arctic-draining river of European Russia, but reaches a different sea.
Usa River: A major right-bank tributary of the Pechora in the Komi Republic. Its waters enter the Pechora near the town of Ust-Usa.
Nenets Autonomous Okrug: A federal subject of Russia on the Arctic coast, inhabited in part by Nenets communities. The lower Pechora and its delta reach this Arctic region.
