Transportation (penal)

Penal transportation was the forced removal of convicted people to distant colonies, where they served sentences through exile, labor, or restricted settlement.

Transportation sentence: A criminal sentence requiring a convicted person to be removed to a distant territory for a specified period or life. Courts imposed this sentence in place of, or alongside, imprisonment and other punishments.
English criminal law: The body of law governing crimes and criminal procedure in England and Wales. Transportation developed within English systems of conviction and sentencing.
John Howard: An English prison reformer whose investigations exposed harsh conditions in eighteenth-century jails. His criticism of prisons formed part of debates over punishment that included transportation.
Australian convict era: The period when Britain transported convicts to Australian colonies, from 1788 until transportation ended in the nineteenth century. Transportation shaped the early institutions and population of several Australian colonies.
